How to Use the Audio Pitch Tool

Choose one audio file from your device. The tool handles a single file that your browser can read. Do not combine multiple recordings in one file if you want a predictable result.

Enter the number of semitones from -12 to 12. A positive value raises the pitch, a negative value lowers it, and 0 leaves the pitch unchanged. The default is 2 semitones.

Processing happens in your browser. When the operation finishes, you get a recording at the selected pitch, saved as a WAV file.

If you do not know what value to start with, use +2 or -2. That is a small change that is often enough to fit a recording to another backing track. Only then try larger shifts if needed.

What Are Semitones and Octaves?

A semitone is the smallest distance between notes in Western music. Twelve semitones make an octave, a full jump after which a note has the same name but sounds higher or lower.

In the tool, you can choose values from -12 to 12. A value of +12 means one octave up, and -12 means one octave down. A value of +1 is one semitone up, -1 is one semitone down, and 0 does not change the pitch.

With an octave up, the pitch is twice as high as the original, and with an octave down, it is twice as low. That is a large change, so in practice smaller values are used more often, such as +2 or -2, if you want to correct the key without radically changing the character.

Pitch is not the same as volume. The tool changes whether a recording sounds higher or lower, not how loudly it plays.

The larger the value, the greater the pitch change. At +2, the recording will be slightly higher; at -2, slightly lower; and at +12 or -12, the difference will be very noticeable. The choice depends on whether you want to subtly correct the key or completely change the recording's register.

Transposing to Another Key

Transposition means shifting the entire recording by the same number of semitones. This lets you match a vocal to a backing track, fit a recording to an instrument, or create a simple harmony.

To move a song to another key, determine the semitone difference between the current key and the target key. If the target key is higher, choose a positive value; if it is lower, choose a negative value. The tool does not detect the key automatically - you decide how many semitones to shift the pitch.

For example, if you want to raise a recording by two semitones, set +2. If you want to lower it by two semitones, set -2. With larger changes, such as an octave, the effect will be much more noticeable.

Remember that you are shifting the entire recording. Vocals, instruments, and backing track all change together. This tool does not let you shift only a selected part of a song or change the vocal and backing track separately.

If you do not know the difference between the keys, try several settings and compare the results. It is best to start with small values, then try larger shifts.

Transposition is also useful when you want to fit a song to your vocal range or play it on an instrument in a different key. Shifting the entire recording keeps the rhythm and structure of the song, though it changes its pitch.

Why the Recording Length Does Not Change

The tool changes the pitch but does not lengthen or shorten the recording. It first stretches the material in time without changing the pitch, then plays it back at a tempo that matches the selected pitch. As a result, the final length is the same as in the source file.

This is useful when you want to lay a vocal over an existing backing track or change the key of a whole song without moving the rhythm. You do not have to adjust the length or cut the track just because the pitch changed.

The recording starts and ends at the same moments as the original. So you can use the result wherever the source file used to be, without extra timing adjustments.

If you want to change the tempo, meaning make the recording longer or shorter, that is a separate operation. This tool is for changing pitch, not duration.

Because the length stays the same, you can compare the original and the result more easily. Both recordings have the same duration, so you can layer them in an editor or listen to one after the other without moving the cursor.

Limitations and What the Tool Does Not Calculate

• Large files may need more memory and processing time. If a recording is very long, split it beforehand or use a shorter excerpt.

• It does not change the output format to anything other than WAV. Check that your browser opens the audio format correctly.
• It is not a key or chord calculator. It does not calculate the distance between arbitrary scales - it provides a ready recording shifted by the selected number of semitones.

Before using the result in an important project, check that the resulting pitch and sound meet your needs. Especially with large shifts, listen to the whole thing and make sure the effect fits the rest of the recording.

Remember that the tool does not choose settings for you. It does not check whether the selected number of semitones fits the song, compare keys, or suggest how to achieve a specific musical effect. You are responsible for choosing the value and judging the final sound.
